Certificate Help - Warning message about PCR security certificate

The certificate used to ensure secure communication from your Pharmacy to the PCRUA and PCR web application is about to be renewed on the evening of 02/02/2012. The certificate will typically already be installed on your Pharmacy computers if they are kept up to date with updates from Microsoft. If this is not the case, a warning may be issued by the browser to indicate that you should not continue to view the website. (See Figure 1).

Figure 1 shows an example of Internet Explorer browser showing a warning that there is a problem with the websites security certificate

It is recommended that the appropriate certificate (a root certificate from Entrust) that the websites require is installed. Microsoft supplies an update tool that will install the relevant certificate automatically.

The following steps describe what to do in order to run this tool and resolve the issue yourself. However if your pharmacy is part of a UK multiple pharmacy group then you may need to contact your groups IT support desk to install the new certificate.

N.B: This update, if required, should be applied to all computers used to access PCR User Association or the PCR website

Step 1: Bypass the security certificate warning

Click on the link 'Continue to this website (not recommended)' (see Figure 2) to continue to the PCRUA website.

N.B: It is safe to click 'Continue to this website' for PCR User Association and PCR websites. All information passed to these websites will be encrypted as before.

Step 2: Navigate to page containing certificate update tool

The page containing these instructions and a link to the update tool can be found at the following location https://pcrua.mhs.scot.nhs.uk/help/cert_update.html. This link should be available in the Message of the day section of the PCRUA website. Navigate to this page and follow instructions in Step 3.

Step 3: Run the Microsoft update tool

The Microsoft update tool can be found by clicking here. You will be prompted by the browser as to whether you wish to run or save the file (see Figure 3). There is no need to save the file prior to running it so just click the 'Run' button.

Figure 3 shows a prompt when downloading the update tool

A further prompt may be shown to ask whether you wish to run the software (see Figure 4), click the 'Run' button. There is no further prompt or confirmation that the file has been successfully run but the relevant certificate should now be installed on your machine.

Figure 4 Prompt when running the update tool

Figure 4 confirms that the certificate has been installed.

The browser prompts shown in Figure 3 and 4 were displayed in Internet Explorer 8. The prompts exhibited in other versions of Internet Explorer may vary.

Step 4: Confirm that the certificate has been installed

Restart Internet Explorer and open the PCR User Association page or click on the desktop shortcut if you have previously created one. The warning that you were receiving previously should now no longer appear.

If you still get a failure please report the issue to the ePharmacy helpdesk on 0131 275 6600 or by email at NSS.PSDHelp@nhs.net.
