COVID Vaccination of Selected Patients via Community Pharmacy

NHS Fife welcomes the involvement of Community Pharmacy in the vaccination of selected patients.

This service will be provided by 15 pharmacies who serve the target population

Summary of service:
  • The SLA is effective from 6th June 2022 to 1st April 2023 and participation will be reviewed at that point
  • The pharmacy contractor is required to assess patient eligibility for the NHS Fife COVID vaccination service in accordance with the SLA, ensuring that vaccinations offered are provided in line with Immunisation against infectious disease (The Green Book)  and will be responsible for the provision of immunisation advice (both written and verbal) to the patient
  • NHS COVID Vaccinations will be expected to be provided, as required, to eligible patients under the terms of the NHS Fife PGD for Comirnaty can be found here
  • Advertising and communications to the public for the COVID vaccination service will be made by NHS Scotland and NHS Fife.  The patient priority criteria must be adhered to.
  • All pharmacists delivering COVID vaccination must undertake immunisation training including anaphylaxis management, and this must be delivered by a recognised provider
  • Ordering and delivery of vaccines will be through National Procurement and placed by the board, one delivery of vaccine stock will be provided at the required stages of first, second and booster vaccination doses
  • Recording of vaccination will be through the Vaccine Management Tool

Please ensure you familiarise yourself with the contents of the PGD, protocols and SPC information.  Once you are satisfied you meet the requirements and are competent to work under the PGDs please ensure the relevant sections are signed and returned to fife.pgd@nhs.scot  Retain a copy of the signed PGD in your pharmacy.

Further education and information on COVID vaccination and the NES resource on storage and handling of vaccine can be found on the NES website.  It is possible to arrange face to face training with senior clinicians within the board, please contact fife.fifepharmacycommpharm@nhs.scot if you wish to organise this support.

The Vaccination Management Tool (VMT) will be used to record consent and vaccination of patients for the service. ACTIONS REQUIRED

1.  Please note that pharmacists will require to have undertaken and be up to date with immunisation training in order to participate in this service to provide immunisation under the NHS Fife PGD, please ensure any training is completed by 6th June 2022.

2.  The PGD for administration of COVID vaccinations can be found here.  Please sign the professional agreement form and return to fife.pgd@nhs.scot (no need to complete authorising clinician/manager section)

3. Register for the Vaccine Management Tool by sending your full name and NHS email address to fife.fifepharmacycommpharm@nhs.scot using the email title "VMT Access Request"
