Reimbursement of Special Preparations and Imported Unlicensed Medicine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The local NHSG guidance for the ordering and supplying of Special formulations and unlicensed or imported unlicensed medicines aims to avoid use of unlicensed products where licensed alternatives exist or more cost effective alternatives are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pharmacist and prescribers should fully understand you carry full personal clinical liability for the prescribing of unlicensed or off-label medicines.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a prescription for a Special is received in the pharmacy, a series of checks must be undertaken in line with the guidance. These include assessment of patient safety, suitability of the medicine, and discussion with the prescriber. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of these prior checks you should also ascertain if Health Board authorisation is required.Please see full documentation listed below. If in doubt please contact the specials team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
