{"id":1950,"date":"2026-03-03T16:07:37","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T16:07:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.communitypharmacy.scot.nhs.uk\/nhs-highland\/pages\/pharmacy-services\/core-services\/public-health\/smoking-cessation\/"},"modified":"2026-03-06T10:37:26","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T10:37:26","slug":"smoking-cessation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.communitypharmacy.scot.nhs.uk\/nhs-highland\/pages\/pharmacy-services\/core-services\/public-health\/smoking-cessation\/","title":{"rendered":"Smoking Cessation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>What is the Service?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The service is an NHS\u2011funded stop\u2011smoking support programme delivered in community pharmacies, aimed at helping people quit through behavioural support, regular follow\u2011up, and access to smoking\u2011cessation medications<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How does it work?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients come to the pharmacy and explain that they want to quit smoking. They are asked to fill out the following form to assess the patient of their current smoking status. The pharmacist will decide what items the patient should receive. Standard practice would be one primary quit device such as a Niquitin Patch, and a secondary quit tool such as an Inhalator or Chewing Gum to help with cravings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The patient should commit to coming to the pharmacy on a weekly basis for twelve weeks to receive the Smoking Cessation tools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On each consultation, the details must be uploaded onto the Patient Care Record (PCR). This tool trigger payment for the service and ensures appropriate record keeping. On the patients fourth and twelfth visit to the pharmacy, the patient needs to have a more in depth check in. This information is held on the form above and also on the PCR. Both of these consultations trigger extra payment to the pharmacy for the service.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Smoking Cessation Advisors\/Shared Care Patients:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NHS Highland has Smoking Cessation Advisors that support patients and Community Pharmacies with Smoking Cessation. The process is mostly the same but the patients prescribed items are already decided from the Shared Care Advisor.
