Provision of Paracetamol Following Childhood Vaccinations
PCA(P)(2025)10 describes the service that allows community pharmacists to provide prophylactic antipyretic paracetamol following the meningococcal group B vaccine and other childhood vaccinations. The service specification was updated in May 2025 to allow off-label use to infants who meet specific criteria, in line with clinical guidance. More vulnerable infants (e.g. those with low weight or with existing health conditions) and those who do not meet the updated eligibility criteria should be referred to their GP or specialist team.
A Patient Group Direction (PGD) is not required to supply paracetamol to eligible patients. Pharmacy teams should use the ‘Men B supply’ Universal Claim Framework (UCF) module to claim for each supply of Meningitis B prophylactic paracetamol.
