Waste Collections (Medicines and Sharps)

All community pharmacies (CPs) currently accept patient returned medicine waste.

In NHS Fife all CPs are also paid an annual retention fee each year in order to provide the sharps disposal service and should ensure that appropriate staff (including locums) are aware of the service level agreement and SOP that facilitates patients to return medical sharps to any community pharmacy in Fife. Note: this should not be confused with the Injection Equipment Service (IEP).

NHS Fife Transport Services provides a 5-weekly scheduled service for the uplift of medicines and sharps waste and the delivery of replacement containers for both patients and the pharmacy. Should any pharmacy require a more frequent uplift please contact NHS Fife Transport Services by telephoning 01592 647167 [Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm].
