Take Home Naloxone

The service aim of the Take Home Naloxone (THN) service is to contribute to a reduction in drug related deaths within Scotland by providing overdose awareness training and naloxone supply to:

  • A drug user at risk of overdose, including patients receiving opioid replacement therapy and clients receiving injection equipment;
  • A carer, a friend or a family member of a drug user at risk of overdose;
  • Individuals working for other drug treatment agencies or in an environment where it is considered there is a risk of overdose.

The THN service is already in place in all Injecting Equipment Provision (IEP) outlets across Fife. The service specification for THN can be found here.

How to register for the service

Who the service is available to

This service should be offered to anyone who may be at risk of an opioid overdose – patients who receive opiate substitution therapy (OST), patients who are prescribed high dose opiates and people who access the IEP service – and their friends and family members. While it is beneficial that patients who are at risk receive overdose awareness training and hold a naloxone kit, they will not be able to use it on themselves in the event of an overdose. It is therefore of great importance to encourage anyone in that patient’s network to hold a naloxone kit and/or to receive overdose awareness training .
Service workers and members of the public may also express an interest in THN and can be offered the service.

How to claim for THN

Claims for providing training to patients AND provision of naloxone should be recorded on the NEO 360 system at the time of the transaction. If this is not possible, the necessary details can be recorded on a claim form and recorded as soon as possible.

The following document contains a step-by-step approach to processing claims on NEO 360 and also provides screenshots of each stage: NEO 360 claim guide. For pharmacies that are unable to digitally record transactions as they happen, copies of the screenshots can be used to record the appropriate details – these should be documented on the NEO 360 system as soon as possible.

Training

All community pharmacists and pharmacy staff who issue supplies of naloxone must have completed the three Pharmacy Naloxone Service Turas modules.
For pharmacies without access to Turas: training can be accessed directly from the Scottish Drug Forum – Overdose Prevention, Intervention and Naloxone e-learning – Scottish Drugs Forum (sdftraining.org.uk). Please note, a FREE account will need to be created.

Training can also be arranged where someone will come to your pharmacy and provide training on the THN service and also how to process claims. For more information on THN or to arrange training, contact Jamie Anderson on 07966 481103 or by e-mailing jamie.anderson5@nhs.scot.

One to One Naloxone Training Checklist is available for providing effective counselling to patients wanting to receive a naloxone kit.
