Naloxone – Emergency Supply Service (launched October 2023)

Following the release of the  Drug Death Taskforce Report there was an action for ALL community pharmacies to hold naloxone for administration in an emergency to people who use drugs to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

This service does not cover the supply of naloxone for use at home/future events, it covers the supply for an immediate emergency administration.

This service should be recorded via UCF. The service will be included as an option under Public Health Services. There will be two options:

a) administration which will cover when naloxone has been supplied or administered for immediate emergency use and

b) expiry for when naloxone has expired.

Take Home Naloxone Service

Currently the following IEPs are participating in NHS Lothian’s ‘Take Home Naloxone’ scheme, whereby patients and/or patients’ friends, carers or family members can receive training and supplies of naloxone to be used in emergency where an opioid overdose is suspected:
