NHS Lothian advice on signing PGDs can be found here. This outlines which part of the PGD you should sign depending on your job role
If you are unsure of how to complete a PGD, an example can be found here.
Important Update – October 2023
For many years the NHS Lothian Contracts department (PCCT) has requested that Pharmacists return to them the signed copies of PGDs to be saved on file here at the Health Board. Following a review of processes and procedures, it has been agreed that NHS Lothian no longer require these. Going forward, you must sign the PGD and retain your copy as per professional and legal requirements, but there is no need to send it to the Health Board. This includes both national and local NHS Lothian PGDs.

Pharmacy First
- Please see the Pharmacy First section on this community pharmacy webpage under NHS Lothian.
Please note: There is no national NHS Pharmacy First Scotland PGD supporting the use of chloramphenicol eye drops in children under the age of 2 years under the NHS Pharmacy First Scotland service.
As detailed in the Lothian Joint Formulary (LJF) https://formulary.nhs.scot/east/eye/eye-conditions/bacterial-conjunctivitis/, self-care is the recommended first line treatment for bacterial conjunctivitis. Most cases are self-limiting and resolve within 5-7 days. For children under the age of 2 years who require treatment you should refer on to their GP. The LJF details Pharmacy First recommendations for infected eye and child bacterial conjunctivitis (including local guidance on antimicrobial eye preparations available on prescription for children < 2 years)
Varenicline
- There is no valid PDG for supply of Varenicline through community pharmacy. A new PDG is in development and awaiting publication.
