Medicines: Care and Review (MCR) allows patients with long-term conditions to access a community pharmacy of their choice for the provision of pharmaceutical care. MCR evolved from a review of the CMS service. It now focuses on three key elements:
- Serial prescribing
- Medication reviews
- Pharmaceutical care planning
Anyone registered with a GP practice in Scotland and receiving regular medication for a long term condition may be suitable for a Serial Prescription (SRx).
MCR links directly to the Pharmacy Care Record (PCR), a web-based tool to support delivery of pharmaceutical care. See the PCR pages for information and advice about this system.
Top tips
- Have a look at TURAS for up-to-date learning resources
- Make sure you know how to claim for serial prescriptions on your PMR, and ensure you claim on the day the patient collects.
- Communicate with GP Practices to find out who the best contact is for resolving serial prescription queries, and communicate with other pharmacies for peer support.
