MCR & Serial Prescriptions

Medicines: Care and Review (MCR) allows patients with long-term conditions to access a community pharmacy of their choice for the provision of pharmaceutical care. MCR evolved from a review of the CMS service. It now focuses on three key elements:

  • Serial prescribing
  • Medication reviews
  • Pharmaceutical care planning

Anyone registered with a GP practice in Scotland and receiving regular medication for a long term condition may be suitable for a Serial Prescription (SRx).

MCR links directly to the Pharmacy Care Record (PCR), a web-based tool to support delivery of pharmaceutical care. See the PCR pages for information and advice about this system.

Top tips

  1. Have a look at TURAS for up-to-date learning resources
  2. Make sure you know how to claim for serial prescriptions on your PMR, and ensure you claim on the day the patient collects.
  3. Communicate with GP Practices to find out who the best contact is for resolving serial prescription queries, and communicate with other pharmacies for peer support.
